Best Way to Test for Food Intolerance

Many of us suffer from various medical conditions that we really can’t explain, and luckily testing for food intolerances can shed some light on the matter. For those daily annoyances like allergies, aches and pains, or headaches, we see that modern medicine hasn’t been able to offer many solutions, except to offer some help with symptoms.

Certainly we have been provided with many coping mechanisms, but few answers as to what could be the actual cause of these medical issues.

For those of us who desire to be healthy each and every day, and not dependant upon medications for relief of symptoms, our frustration mounts until we’re fed up, tired of symptoms, and become ready to try just about anything. We’d like to shed a little light on what we’ve found to be very effective in identifying the root cause of many common health conditions.

Testing for Food Intolerances

Most of us are quite familiar with a ‘classic food allergy response’ — which would be a severe reaction to a particular food, with the onset of hives, throat swelling, or difficulty breathing after eating certain foods, such as peanuts or shrimp. This is one kind of a systemic, high reactive response by the body to a certain food, which can be life-threatening and the solution is to completely avoid the food for life.

Symptoms of Food Intolerance

Harder to identify, but no less significant, are what we call hidden food intolerances, which acutally arouses a much more subtle response by the body. These little responses are identifiable by minor symptoms, like nasal congestion, eczema, psoriasis, skin rashes, migraines, headaches, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), allergies, sinus infections, post-nasal drip, asthma, constipation, diarrhea, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, arthritis, inflammation of the joints and tissues, weight gain, rapid weight loss, gas and bloating, fibromyalgia, muscle aches, brain fog, and insomnia. These all point to a possible hidden food intolerance.

One of the most toxic things you can put in your body is a food that you are allergic to, as it can have a highly inflammatory effect on your body, which can trigger a systemic response by all of your cells and tissues. Any food that causes inflammation, which is actually a type of allergic response, or any substance that compromises your immune system is a toxin, in the same category as viruses and bacteria, because your body tries to attack it in a similar way.

It can be quite difficult to recognize food allergens, until we eliminate a food category (like dairy, or wheat/gluten), and then see what happens when we add it back into our diet after a period of time, normally 1-3 months. The body undergoes natural healing and detoxification, but its important to get rid of allergenic food sources for true and complete detoxification to occur, and for the body to cool inflammation and reduce the aggravation and irritation caused by the inflammatory response.

Why Food Intolerances Occur

Hidden food intolerance arise because of the antibody IgG, and can cause vague symptoms which are often not attributed to a specific food, (for example, clearing your throat of post-nasal drip). This is very different from immediate or severe reactions mediated by the antibody IgE, the most common example being a peanut allergy, where severe anaphylaxis can be very dangerous. So you can see how the IgG response is more mild than the extreme IgE, but they are still immune system response, and the mild IgG response can cause the onset of those annoying symptoms of food intolerance.

For food sensitivities and hidden food intolerances, it can be a real problem when various tissues are constantly inflamed, and the allergenic response is extended over the long-term. This puts your body in a state of ongoing inflammation and irritation. On a day to day basis when symptom-producing foods are commonly eaten, you likely won’t experience a direct or immediate allergic response, especially when you eat those foods all the time.

If we only ate certain food rarely, it would be easy to identify what food is causing our symptoms. But the reaction is hidden and unfortunately it lies constantly aggravating the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract, where 60% of our immune function happens.

When the inner lining of your gastrointestinal tract becomes inflamed, and when allergenic foods pass through and damage the sensitive cells in your small and large intestines, it causes small ruptures and micro-tears. This allows undigested food particles and other toxins to escape into the bloodstream. Your body then produces antibodies to these specific foods and toxins and this incites a reaction by causing inflammation, and symptoms like migraines and skin rashes.

Luckily, when you eliminate the most common offending foods for about 28 days and ‘re-challenge’ your body by reintroducing individual foods, you are able to illicit an exaggerated response and pinpoint food intolerances more precisely than even with blood testing or skin testing.

Food elimination and food rechallenge diets have been used for many years to pinpoint food sensitivities. When you take each food and introduce to your system one at a time, you can detect and uncover what foods are triggering your headaches or watery eyes, or post nasal drip, or whichever symptom of food intolerance you are suffering from.
