Vitamin D is acts as a hormone in the body, and because it is fat soluble it gets sequestered (or sticks) to fat tissue, and your body can’t use it. Vitamin D is essential for many things. We’ve all heard it’s important for bone health, but more importantly it plays a role in immune function and decreasing inflammation. Fat cells and extra weight is very inflammatory in the body, and Vitamin D can help the body deal with this better.
Magnesium deficiency can affect the ability of your cells to take in glucose properly, and magnesium is involved in over 300 important metabolic reactions, including fat mobilization, in the body. Farmers are not required to place magnesium back into the soil after harvest, and so they don’t. This means that our food supply is becoming more and more deficient in magnesium each harvest season that passes. It’s easy to test the magnesium level in serum, but this stays mostly the same in many people. A better way to detect magnesium deficiency is to look at the red blood cell magnesium level, which shows deficiency better.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can affect your energy levels, as well as the ability of your red blood cells to carry oxygen. A very important vitamin for your nervous system, B12 can help with short-term memory problems and circulation issues. Vitamin B12 is called a methyl donor, which simply means it stores a molecule that your cells need in order to activate other molecules. Vitamin B12 helps your liver detoxify itself, and aids in lots of reactions inside your cells. Testing for vitamin deficiency in Vitamin B12 is essential in ensuring you achieve the most benefit from your weight loss efforts.
