Insulin resistance will progress over time into diabetes, which without a doubt is a very serious medical condition, and one of our country’s leading causes of blindness, heart disease, kidney disease, circulation problems and general disability.  As of 2007, 23.6 million people—7.8% of the population—have diabetes in this country. As well as another 57 million people with pre-diabetes who have not been diagnosed yet.

Insulin resistance is also a major contributor to heart disease, which of course leads to heart attacks.  It is also a significant risk factor for stroke -- which is when blood flow to the brain is compromised.  Insulin resistance is a major cause of high triglycerides and low “good” cholesterol or HDL.  Insulin resistance is also a huge risk factor for high blood pressure.

Insulin resistance is a risk factor for breast cancer, as well as breast cancer reoccurrence, in addition to pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, dementia, kidney disease, nerve damage, and heart attack.

These conditions are without a doubt very serious and deserve attention.  Specifically as it relates to weight gain, insulin resistance makes a person more likely to gain weight and more likely to find weight loss very difficult.  The condition of insulin resistance impairs the transport of glucose into the cells.  The cells are starved for nutrition and a starving organism will resist weight loss.  The body will produce chemicals which cause cravings for sugar and starches and metabolism slows to conserve energy. 

It is no wonder that weight loss is a struggle.  People will often diet, do all the things they have heard they should -- such as increase whole grains, increase fruit and vegetables, eat breakfast, and regular exercise -- only to find that they have not lost much weight, or any weight, or worse they gained weight with all of these efforts.  I believe it is one of the main reasons people give up their weight loss attempts, because there are no results, and no explanations.
